US strikes Iran ahead of midterm elections
What happened
The US struck Qeshm Island, an Iranian island on the Strait of Hormuz, on Monday, the Wall Street Journal and CBS reported, citing US officials.
Iran's state news agency Irna reported explosions on the island; the US military has not commented.
US officials told CBS the strikes were limited and defensive, a response to Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps firing on a US aircraft.
The Revolutionary Guards did not comment on the strikes but said they shot down two US MQM-170 drones and one MQ-9 drone.
The Wall Street Journal said Washington has kept recent small-scale strikes secret so as not to suggest a return to its full military campaign against Iran.
Asked on Monday whether he would strike Iran after Tuesday's US midterm elections, Donald Trump said "no"; Qatar said both sides are reviewing mediators' proposals.
“The ball is now in America's court to prevent war.”
