US midterm elections 2026 live: Democrats exceed 250 House seats as blue wave sweeping Congress grows
What happened
President Donald Trump named Stephen Miller, the architect of his hardline immigration policy, as White House chief of staff, to start Monday 9 November.
Miller replaces Susie Wiles, who has held the post since Trump's inauguration and will move into his political operation, according to DW and the Guardian.
The announcement came days after Democrats won both chambers of Congress in the midterm elections.
Trump said he "wanted to make a change" and called Miller one of his most trusted advisers, the Guardian reported.
Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer said Trump "learned nothing from his historic defeat".
Congressman Robert Garcia, poised to chair the House oversight committee, told Miller to "lawyer up" and said Democrats will keep investigating him.
“Sometimes in life you have to make moves.”
