Meghan’s father Thomas arrested over child sex abuse material
What happened
US federal agents arrested Thomas Markle, the 82-year-old father of Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, at a senior care facility in Florida on Friday over child sexual abuse material, the FBI said.
A federal complaint charges him with one count of possessing such material, which agents say they found in two storage units near Los Angeles that he has rented since 2008.
Agents seized about 78 items, including slides, film negatives and books, according to an FBI affidavit; the bureau is still reviewing them.
The affidavit says at least two images show a man a witness identified as Markle with a nude underage girl.
A federal judge in Tampa released Markle on home detention with electronic monitoring, and it is not yet clear when he will be moved to California.
Bill Essayli, a senior federal prosecutor in Los Angeles, said the seized material shows no evidence of victims in the US, but the investigation is continuing.
