What happened
Democrats won both the House of Representatives and the Senate in Tuesday's US midterm elections, delivering a heavy defeat to President Donald Trump and the Republicans.
The vote reflected anger over living costs, tariffs and Trump's war against Iran, which has pushed fuel prices up, according to The Hindu.
Trump told The New York Times he would accept the results and work with the Democrats, while saying he would stay the course in the Iran war.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, a Republican, will step down as party leader, his spokesman confirmed on Wednesday.
Democrat Hakeem Jeffries said on his website that he will run for speaker of the House.
Vice President JD Vance said the Iran war was why Republicans lost, The Hindu reported; Der Standard said results in Alaska and Mississippi were still pending.
“It is a new morning in America.”
