William Shatner and ‘Star Trek’ Family Mourn Patrick Stewart With Picard Tributes: ‘Godspeed, Captain’
What happened
British actor Patrick Stewart, best known as Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek: The Next Generation, died at 86 at his Los Angeles home, his family said.
His family said he died after a short but severe struggle with Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia, surrounded by loved ones.
Stewart also played Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men films, and spent most of his career on stage, including decades with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Queen Elizabeth II knighted him in 2010 for services to drama; he also won a Grammy and two Olivier Awards.
His death came days after that of Star Trek actor Walter Koenig, who played navigator Pavel Chekov, according to Yle.
Stewart is survived by his wife, singer-songwriter Sunny Ozell, and his children Sophie and Daniel, El Universo reported.
