British comedian Russell Brand found guilty of rape, sexual assault
What happened
A London jury has found comedian and actor Russell Brand guilty of raping one woman and sexually assaulting three others, between 1999 and 2009.
Judge Joel Bennathan revoked Brand's bail and told him the rape verdict means "inevitably a significant custodial term"; sentencing is set for Monday.
Brand denied all charges, saying some encounters were consensual and had been "reimagined" after a 2023 Channel 4 documentary and newspaper reports, according to the Guardian.
The Guardian also reported that police are investigating two further rape allegations against him and have passed files to the Crown Prosecution Service.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of the Metropolitan Police said Brand used his fame to exploit women, and that he had "a sense of entitlement" as his profile grew.
“Brand used his influence, status and fame to exploit and sexually offend against women”
