Spain’s Sanchez says US voters rejected hate and elite privilege
What happened
Spain's Transport Minister Óscar Puente resigned on Tuesday, six days after a high-speed train collision near Urda that killed 69 people.
He also withdrew his name from the lists for the November 29 general election, announcing both decisions in Congress.
The crash happened when a Renfe train hit a stopped Iryo train, after a control centre let it keep moving despite an automatic safety system halting all trains on a 63-kilometre stretch.
It was Spain's second fatal rail crash in under a year, following a January accident on the same line that left 46 dead, according to the BBC.
Conservative and far-right opposition parties, along with some government allies, had demanded his resignation, and unions criticised him for appearing to blame one control centre operator.
Hours earlier, Puente had presented new safety measures, including control centre alert software, an AI agent for oversight and a second-operator check when automatic systems fail.
“A transport minister in a country like Spain cannot remain in office after two accidents of this seriousness in less than a year”
