Santiago Pena, Paraguay President, steps down as banking crisis sows chaos
What happened
Paraguay's Senate removed President Santiago Peña from office on Friday over a banking collapse that left millions of customers unable to reach their deposits, according to DW.
Vice President Pedro Alliana takes over and will serve until the term ends in August 2028.
Prosecutors ordered the arrest of Peña and former central bank chief Carlos Carvallo in a criminal investigation, and officials later said Peña was placed under house arrest.
Lawmakers accused Peña of conflicts of interest and misuse of pension funds; the Senate also passed a bill to advance savers up to 121 million guaraníes.
