What happened

All nine people aboard a Learjet 60 died when it crashed into a Florida neighbourhood near a busy road on Sunday, US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said.

The jet came down in Palm Beach County at 12:50pm local time and burst into a fireball, close to homes and passing cars.

It had taken off from Austin-Bergstrom airport in Texas and was bound for the Bahamas, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

Air traffic control recordings and tracking data show the pilots reported turbulence and icing at 35,000 feet and asked to climb, then the plane dived steeply.

The pilot declared an emergency before the aircraft banked sharply and hit the ground, according to ABC.

The FAA will help the National Transportation Safety Board investigate the cause, and about 600 people are being evacuated from a nearby mobile home community.

“Today's plane crash in Palm Beach County, is a horrific tragedy.”
