US approves sale of 500 Patriot missiles to Ukraine
What happened
The US State Department has approved the possible sale of 500 PAC-3 MSE Patriot missiles to Ukraine in a deal worth $2.1 billion.
Canada, Germany and Norway will fund the purchase through the JUMPSTART programme, along with national funds financed by a European Union loan to Ukraine; no US money is involved, according to the State Department.
The package also includes classified and unclassified spare parts, logistics and software support, and Lockheed Martin is the prime contractor.
The State Department said the sale needs no extra US personnel in Ukraine and will not affect US defence readiness, Radio Svoboda reported.
The US Center for Strategic and International Studies estimated on 27 July 2026 that US PAC-3 stocks fell by about two-thirds, from over 2,300 to under 830.
Zelensky said in October that Ukraine is not a US priority in Patriot missile allocation, with the Middle East ranked first, and that Ukraine gets about 12 anti-ballistic missiles a month.
“The proposed sale will improve Ukraine's ability to counter current and future threats by strengthening its integrated air and missile defence capabilities.”
