What happened

Cristiano Ronaldo, 41, said on Thursday he is retiring from the Portugal national team after 23 years, announcing it in a video on social media.

He ends his international career with 146 goals in 234 appearances, both men's all-time records, according to CNA.

Ronaldo captained Portugal to the Euro 2016 title and helped them win the Nations League in 2019 and 2025.

Ronaldo left the Portugal camp without permission in late September, citing broken promises from coach Jorge Jesus, which Jesus denied. The federation suspended him for 30 days and fined him €255.

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro thanked Ronaldo on X, and the Portuguese Football Federation expressed profound and eternal gratitude.
