President of the European Central Bank Christine Lagarde to stand down in February
What happened
European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde will leave her post on Feb. 7, 2027, months ahead of the scheduled end of her term, the ECB said Thursday.
Her term was due to run until October 2027, and the European Council will appoint her successor.
European Council President António Costa said the process of naming a successor starts immediately and will proceed without delay.
Lagarde told a press conference she is leaving early to gain freedom of expression on matters beyond monetary policy.
The exit comes before France's April presidential election, so the new French president will have no part in choosing the next ECB chief, according to Aberdeen Investments economist Felix Feather.
Yle names Dutch central bank ex-head Klaas Knot and BIS chief Pablo Hernández de Cos as the strongest candidates to succeed her.
“I want to have the freedom of speech, the freedom of expression and the freedom to engage on matters that are not monetary policy matters”
